The Goethe Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s worldwide cultural institution. It promotes the study of German abroad and encourages international cultural exchange. As well as fostering knowledge about Germany and providing information on its culture, society and politics, it sets internationally recognised standards in the teaching, learning and testing of German as a foreign language. The Language Department is a founding member of ALTE and a member of the European language policy organisation ECML.
The Goethe Institut is also a member of the Language Testing Group as part of the European Survey on Language Competences. This project is a major European Commission initiative to support the development of language learning policies across Europe (www.surveylang.org). The GI produces the tests for German. It was also the lead organisation in the “Schule im Wandel“ inne.
